SummaryThe present study should prospectively contribute to the explanation of the pathogenesis of panic disorder, agoraphobia and somatoform disorders.
The vestibular neuropathia is the acute unilateral vestibular failure and represents a negative life event and is ideal to study the development of anxiety disorders prospectively.
It was shown that there is a higher incidence of panic disorder, agoraphobia and somatoform disorders 2 years after the failure of the vestibular organ.
Moreover, the key role of specific cognitions as a symptom and cause of anxiety disorders over the time could be studied and shown how dysfunctional cognitions can predicate the development of these mental disorders.
Contrary to expectations, no influence of personality on the development of panic disorder, agoraphobia, somatoform disorders can be determined.
This study can close the gap between a large number of retrospective studies, which attempt to explain the development of panic disorders.
